Car launches this week: Tata’s Curvv ICE for ₹10 lakh, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 XRT off-roader and more

The first week of September 2024 saw exciting new launches in the automotive sector from Tata, Hyundai, Volvo, Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles and Mercedes-Benz India. While Volvo, Audi and Mercedes-Benz India introduced new models in the premium segment, Tata Motors launched the Curvv ICE at ₹ 9.99 lakh.

Here’s a look at the top automotive launches this week:

Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT

Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 5 XRT, a new variant designed for off-road use. It features a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system and is expected to offer similar performance to the standard Ioniq 5 AWD, which produces 321 PS and 605 Nm of torque. It is equipped with the larger 84 kWh battery pack found across the Ioniq 5 range.

Notably, the Ioniq 5 XRT is the first Hyundai vehicle to feature Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting access to over 17,000 Tesla Supercharger stations. The pre-facelift Ioniq 5 is priced at Rs 46.05 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

Volvo XC90 Facelift and EX90

This week, Volvo has unveiled two major new models: the new EX90 and a refreshed XC90. The XC90 will now be available exclusively in hybrid form, ditching diesel and petrol engines. The T8 plug-in hybrid model features a 310 PS turbocharged petrol engine combined with a 145 PS electric motor, offering an all-electric range of up to 70 km.

The EX90 is Volvo’s latest electric SUV and is equipped with a 14.7 kWh battery that can be fully charged in around three hours using an AC fast charger. Equipped with a 111 kWh battery that provides a WLTP range of up to 600 km on a single charge, the EX90 is Volvo’s latest electric SUV.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, the latest model from Mercedes-Benz India, features a dual-electric motor setup that produces 658 hp and 950 Nm of torque. Priced at ₹2.25 crore (ex-showroom), it comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 210 kmph.

Certified according to WLTP standards, the electric SUV offers a range of up to 611 km on a single charge. With fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes, while a 20-minute charge provides a range of 300 km.

Java 42 FJ

On Tuesday, Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles launched the new Jawa 42 FJ in India, with a starting price of ₹1.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as a sportier and more powerful variant in the Jawa 42 range, it is priced ₹26,000 higher than the base Jawa 42 model.

The motorcycle is powered by a 334cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 21.45 bhp and 29.62 Nm of torque. It features a six-speed gearbox and an assisted clutch. Bookings are now open and deliveries will commence soon. The 42 FJ will compete with the likes of the Royal Enfield Classic 350, TVS Ronin and the Royal Enfield Hunter 350.

Tata Curvv Ice Engine

Tata Motors has launched the Curvv ICE with an introductory price of ₹9.99 lakh for the entry-level petrol variant. The entry-level diesel variant starts at ₹11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It features Tata’s new 1.2-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol engine, which produces 125 bhp.

The vehicle is available with 6-speed manual transmission and 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. Deliveries will commence from September 12 and the introductory price is valid for reservations made before October 31.

The new Audi Q5 SUV

Audi also unveiled the third generation of the Q5 SUV this week, which features a completely redesigned exterior and interior. It is available with three powertrain options: the base model with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine producing 204 PS and 340 Nm of torque; a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine making 204 PS and 400 Nm of torque; and the SQ5 variant with a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 367 PS and 550 Nm of torque.

The 2025 Aston Martin Vanquish

At a high-profile event in Venice, Aston Martin unveiled the 2025 Vanquish. It is powered by a 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine that generates 824 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful engine ever fitted to an Aston Martin.

The Vanquish features an eight-speed automatic transmission and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of 214 mph. It is likely to debut in India in the second quarter of 2025, and is expected to be priced at more than the DBS.
