A day after wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined the Congress, BJP leader Brij Bhushan warned that “Congress will have to repent one day”. He accused Phogat of “cheating” in wrestling and even termed the 2023 wrestlers’ protest as “a Congress move”. He said, “… today, this has been proven to be true.”
Olympics Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia were at the forefront of the fighters’ protest against the former Wrestling Federation of India (Head of WFI Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Phogat and Punia entered politics Arena on Friday joined Congress in pledging to “not be afraid or back down.”
A day after the event, Bhushan said, “On January 18, 2023, when the The protest began at Jantar MantarI had said that this is not a movement of athletes, Congress is behind it, especially [Congress leaders] “Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda, Priyanka, Rahul, this is a Congress movement.”
The BJP leader said Bhupinder HoodaDeepender Hooda, Bajrang or Vinesh “did not sit (to protest) for respect for the girl child” but “because of them, daughters of Haryana are facing shame,” he said.
“They used their daughters for politics, they defamed their daughters. They were not fighting for the honour of their daughters, they were fighting for politics…” said the former WFI chief.
Bhushan accused Phogat of cheating and said, “I want to ask Vinesh Phogat if a player can try out in two weight categories in a day. Can the trials be stopped for five hours after the weigh-in?… If you reach there by winning in wrestling, you reached there by cheating. God has punished you for the same,” he said.
The BJP leader also asked, “Isn’t it true that Bajrang went to the Asian Games without any evidence?”
Phogat and Punia joined the Congress in Haryana as the 90-member state Assembly is scheduled to go to polls on October 5 and the counting of votes will be held on October 8.
The Congress on Friday released its first list of 31 candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections and fielded former wrestler Vinesh Phogat from Julana. Within hours of joining the party, Bajrang Punia was made the working president of the All India Kisan Congress.
