Kuki militants reportedly deployed long-range rockets among civilians at two locations, killing a 78-year-old man identified as RK Rabei and injuring six others in Bishnupur, Manipur police confirmed on Saturday.
“Additional police teams and security forces have been swiftly deployed to conduct search operations in the hill ranges adjacent to the area,” Manipur Police said in a post on X.
The police also mentioned that three bunkers were destroyed due to the attack. “Two bunkers in Mualsang village and one in Laika Mualsau village of Churachandpur were destroyed,” the Manipur Police confirmed in the post.
Manipur Police said additional police teams and security forces have been rushed to carry out search operations in the hill ranges adjacent to the area.
The police also said that the Superintendent of Police (SP) was fired upon by suspected Kuki militants in the area. “Police teams from Bishnupur district, including the SP, rushed to the area where they were fired upon by suspected Kuki militants, but the police team responded firmly and repelled the attack. A military helicopter has been deployed for aerial patrolling,” Manipur Police said.
Senior officers, including the Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Inspector General of Police, also inspected the areas to take immediate countermeasures and monitor the volatile situation. A team from the Mobile Forensic Unit, DFS, Manipur was at the spot to collect evidence.
Manipur Police said in a post on X: “High-level security meetings have been held to take stock of law and order. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and police are prepared to respond to any contingency that may arise.”
Khuraijam Athouba, spokesperson for the Coordination Committee for Integrity of Manipur (COCOMI), said, “There has been an increase in Kuki aggression… There have been incidents of drone bombing in the last few days… There were two missile attacks today… It is considered to be one of the deadliest attacks by the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorist groups who had taken shelter in the surrounding hilly areas… It has targeted the homeland of Mairembam Koireng Singh, the first chief minister of Manipur. His statue and properties have been destroyed… The situation is out of control. The central forces being deployed in the hilly areas are ignorant and are unable to take charge of the security situation… The Coordination Committee for Integrity of Manipur has declared an indefinite public emergency in the state of Manipur… We appeal to all to take shelter in safe areas…”
Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Army and Manipur Police recovered caches of weapons and ammunition from sensitive areas on the outskirts of Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts in a joint operation.
The Indian Army recovered a large-calibre launcher, a 12-bore double-barrel rifle, a 177 rifle with magazine, two pistols, a slug gun, five grenades, ammunition and war material.
“In a significant effort to restore peace and stability in Manipur, the Indian Army has intensified its search operations across the region to counter rising violent activities. In coordination with Manipur Police, the Army successfully executed a joint operation on 5th September 2024,” the statement by PRO Defence, Manipur said.
