‘Lock those PCB officials in a room and show them Musheer Khan’s innings from the Duleep Trophy’: Kamran Akmal

Former Pakistan goalkeeper Kamran Akmal has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (printed circuit board) for prioritising the Champions One-Day Cup over developing young talent. Akmal believes the tournament is a waste of time and money and that the PCB should focus on providing opportunities to promising players and also adopt India’s structure.

Akmal featured Musheer KhanRecent performance in the Duleep Trophywhere he scored a brilliant century. He argued that such talented players are playing against the best bowlers in the Indian circuit, and a similar model can be established in Pakistan, which will help Pakistan Cricket grow.

“We have reached the eighth position in the ICC Test rankings. Here we are, crying for red-ball cricket after being defeated by Bangladesh. On the other hand, the Champions One-Day Cup 2024 is coming up. Was this the right time?” the journalist asked Kamran Akmal on a YouTube chat show.

“In my opinion, our president Mohsin Naqvi “We hope that Pakistan cricket will get back on track with this tournament and we can beat England in a way that will be remembered forever. Our mentor is also hopeful and thinks that the players will come out of this tournament and Pakistan cricket will improve,” Akmal replied.

Akmal criticised the PCB leadership for their unfounded hopes for the Champions One-Day Cup. He suggested that chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the team’s mentor are overly optimistic about the tournament’s potential to revitalise Pakistan cricket and defeat England in a memorable fashion.

“In my opinion, the Champions One-Day Cup is a waste of time and money. These decisions will have huge consequences as it will lead to a loss of interest in the game and ruin the thought process of many children who look up to the sport. It is a worrying situation,” Akmal said.

To illustrate his point, Akmal mentioned Musheer Khan’s recent performance in the Duleep Trophy. Khan’s impressive hundred showed the talent and potential that exists within the domestic circuit. Akmal urged the PCB officials responsible for the Champions One-Day Cup to take note and prioritise such domestic tournaments in Pakistan as well.

“Today, Indian Musheer Khan scored 181. So I think someone should lock those PCB officials (who suggested this Champions Cup idea) in a room and show them Musheer Khan’s innings in the Duleep Trophy. Explain to them that this is how players are made.
