iPhone 16 launch: Action buttons, camera improvements, and a bold new look – what to expect

Apple He is ready to reveal the iPhone 16 at its “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9 at 10:30 pm IST. The much-awaited launch is expected to feature four new iPhone models – iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. As with every iPhone launch, Apple is likely to introduce multiple updates to both the standard models (iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus) and the Pro versions.

Rumors suggest that the new iPhones will be available for pre-order shortly after launch, with sales potentially beginning as early as September 20. However, certain AI-powered features from Apple Intelligence may not be available at launch. Below are the expected changes for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: What are the design changes?

Since the iPhone 11, Apple has maintained a consistent design for its iPhones, with the Dynamic Island feature being the most notable recent addition. While the iPhone 16 series will maintain a similar look, leaked images point to minor tweaks. The camera module is expected to be narrower with vertically aligned lenses, and the LED flash could be moved out of the camera module and onto the back panel of the phone.

Leaked dummy models suggest that Apple could introduce a new white color to the base line, and the iPhone 16 models may come in more vibrant colors compared to the lighter shades typically seen on the Pro models.

Another anticipated change is the addition of new side buttons, likely called the Action and Capture buttons. The Action button will offer customizable shortcuts, while the Capture button will serve as the camera shutter. The traditional alert slider could be removed from the iPhone 16 lineup. The Capture button is expected to be a capacitive touchpad, potentially allowing for swipe gestures for functions like zoom.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: What new display features can we expect?

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to feature slightly smaller displays compared to their Pro counterparts, thanks to slimmer bezels. Both models will feature the Dynamic Island notch. However, unlike the Pro models, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will retain a 60Hz refresh rate. A higher refresh rate may be introduced on the standard models in 2025.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Will this series have better performance?

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to feature Apple’s A18 chipset, which will allow these models to feature Apple Intelligence features. However, these features will not be available on older models, such as the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus.

The new models will also feature an upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) and increased RAM to handle AI-powered tasks. While the exact RAM capacity is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest it could be 8GB, with the possibility of increasing to 12GB in the future.

Camera improvements include a 48MP main camera and an improved ultra-wide-angle lens with autofocus and a wider aperture. These models will retain the dual-camera setup of their predecessors, but with enhanced capabilities, including JPEG XL support and a new Capture button.
