Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as a top tourist destination, says Amit Shah

Jammu and Kashmir is a paradise and every photograph taken there is postcard-perfect. For years, travellers have visited the erstwhile state to enjoy the natural beauty of what some argue is better than Switzerland. However, the current Union Territory was previously hit by terrorist attacks and many tourists stayed away from the region. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 7 claimed that Jammu and Kashmir is entering a new phase of peace and progress.

He noted that the region has been transformed from a hotbed of terrorism to a prime tourist destination. During a two-day visit to the Union Territory, Shah is expected to present the BJP manifesto ahead of the assembly elections and meet party members at a ‘Karyakarta Sammelan’.

“J&K is witnessing a new era of peace and development under the Modi government. The region has transformed from a terror hotspot to a tourism hotspot, with an increase in educational and economic activities,” Shah posted on X.

He is scheduled to launch the BJP’s election campaign and release the party manifesto as part of his visit to Jammu and Kashmir that began on Friday.

CNBC-TV18 earlier reported that the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department reported an extraordinary rise in the number of visitors, surpassing previous years. In 2023, the region welcomed over 21.1 million tourists, significantly boosting the local economy.

The launch of the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle in Gulmarg was a highlight and the tourism department said additional high-profile events are planned.

In addition, the region’s stunning landscapes have attracted the attention of the film industry, with more than 50 movies filmed in its picturesque settings over the past year. This cinematic interest, combined with the government’s dedicated efforts to improve stability, has been key to revitalizing the tourism sector.
