Protest against demolition of Rajgangpur station FOB without making alternative arrangements, warning of agitation

Rourkela News: There is anger among the city residents as the railway administration has started the process of demolishing the only foot over-bridge (FOB) located at the eastern end of Rajgangpur station which is more than 100 years old. This years-old bridge used to connect both ends of the city including platforms 1 and 2 of Rajgangpur railway station. Now the Railway Department has constructed a new bridge in the middle of the station. After which the effort to demolish the old bridge has been started. The Railway Department says that this old bridge was declared dangerous three years ago. So it is necessary to remove it now. But local people say that when nothing has happened in three years, the decision to remove it without making alternative arrangements is unfair. At both ends of the old bridge there are food and beverage hotels with parking, shops for essential commodities for passengers, pharmacies, ATMs etc. while the new bridge on the southern side is yet to come down. There is no parking at the northern end. Therefore, the decision to remove the old bridge now is not appropriate under any circumstances.

Memorandum submitted to Union Minister demanding intervention

The city residents are demanding that the goods depot situated between the old and new bridge at the northern end should first be removed and connected and if necessary, the removal of the old bridge should be considered. Therefore, it is completely unfair to remove the bridge without a public hearing. Expressing their opposition in this regard, 16 councillors have submitted a memorandum addressed to the local railway station manager. A copy of it was handed over to the Sundergarh MP and the Union Minister, who reached Rajgangpur on Saturday and a demand for intervention was submitted. A warning of agitation has also been issued if the demands are not met.
