Israel carries out intense airstrikes in central Syria, killing four people, state media says

A series of Israeli airstrikes hit several areas in central Syria on Sunday night, killing at least four people, wounding 13 and setting off fires, state media reported.

Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that Syrian air defenses “faced an aggression that targeted several points in the central region,” damaging a road in Hama province and sparking fires that firefighting crews were struggling to control Monday morning.

At least four people were killed and 13 wounded at the Masyaf National Hospital in the western Hamas province, SANA reported, citing hospital director Faysal Haydar. It was not immediately clear whether they were civilians or militants.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based body that monitors the situation in Syria, reported that one of the strikes targeted a scientific research centre in Maysaf and other locations where “Iranian militias and experts are stationed to develop weapons in Syria.” Local media also reported attacks around the coastal city of Tartous.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against targets inside government-controlled parts of war-torn Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges or analyses the operations.

The strikes often target Syrian forces or Iranian-backed groups. Israel has vowed to end Iranian entrenchment in Syria, particularly because that country is a key route for Iran to send weapons to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Hezbollah has been clashing with Israeli forces for the past 11 months in the context of Israel’s war against Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, in Gaza.
