All about Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River and spans over 430 square kilometres. It is of international importance for preserving the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, which account for over two-thirds of the global population. In addition to rhinos, the park is home to other megafauna such as Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, swamp deer and water buffalo, making it a key player in India’s Project Tiger and endangered species conservation initiatives.

Kaziranga’s diverse landscape, comprising grasslands, wetlands and dense forests, creates a rich ecology. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 species of birds. It is an important stopover for migratory birds and is recognised as an area of great importance for bird diversity.

Early morning is usually the best time to see the park’s residents in full bloom, with the misty backdrop enhancing the beauty of the landscape. Bird lovers will find this a paradise for spotting migratory birds that arrive during the winter, such as the Indian goose, pelicans and the rare storks.

While safaris are the biggest draw here, be sure to also visit the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, home to India’s largest orchid collection, to witness the park’s botanical wonders.

Best time to visit Kaziranga National Park

Although the park opens in October, the best time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is cooler and wildlife is more visible. The monsoon season, which runs from May to September, brings heavy rains and flooding to the park, providing much-needed nourishment for the grasslands but making access difficult. If you’re a photographer, we recommend March and April because animal sightings are best.
