“There are a lot more people who want to work with me now. There are more people who want to take selfies with me now. I love it. But I don’t take the adulation or rejection very seriously.
“…but I think I’m just sticking to the basics and doing what I’ve done all these years. So I’m neither too excited nor too upset about anything. I’m just taking each day as it comes,” Massey told PTI when asked if there was any change in the way people perceived him after “12th Fail”.
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, “12th Fail” was made on a relatively low budget. ₹20 crores and earned around ₹70 crore at the box office, making it a surprise hit last year.

“There has been a definite change. When I first started acting, I prayed for something like this to happen and it is happening today. People love the characters more than the people who play them. That is a great proof that people want to identify with the characters they see,” he said.
“It took generations of actors to bring us to where we are. There was Balraj Sahni in the 50s and 60s. He worked hard so that we could see this day. Naseer sahab, late Om Puri ji, Pankaj Kapur ji, Irrfan sahab… All these guys have paved the way for us, but I think there is still a lot more to change,” he added.
The actor, however, said he does not want to limit himself to “massive films” if the right project comes along.
“Right now, I am enjoying the kind of work I am getting. I have also done many such films which are considered mass hits. ’12th Fail’, ‘Mirzapur’ and ‘Haseen Dillruba’ are mass hits. It totally depends on how you look at it. I definitely see them as mass hits,” he said.
Massey also wants to break his image as a serious actor.
“I don’t want to pigeonhole myself. I’ve always said that. If a good comedy movie comes along, I’d love to do it. I’ve tried. Unfortunately, those movies haven’t been as successful. But that certainly wouldn’t stop me from going out and experimenting again.”
