The festival of Nuakhai, celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Bhado and the second day of Ganesh Puja, is associated with art, culture, language, tradition, behaviour of Western Odisha and emotions of the people of the region. It was earlier celebrated on different dates. But in 1991, the then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik had announced that they would celebrate Nuakhai together on Rishi Panchami Tithi and declared this day a government holiday. On this, the entire family took the prasad together after offering food, kheer made of paddy, which is ready for paddy harvesting in 60 days, dressed in new clothes and offered it to their family’s mother deity Samleshwari and their ancestors. Panchayati Raj Minister for Rural Development and Drinking Water Ravinarayan Nayak had reached his ancestral village Khandonkata Nuakhai under Kuchinda subdivision to celebrate. After celebrating the festival with his family, he left for Sambalpur to attend the Chief Minister’s programme.
