Mexican filmmaker, five-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron shared his experience directing ‘Disclaimer’ and how challenging it was for him, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (Read also: Nicole Kidman leaves Venice Film Festival after learning of her mother’s death: ‘I have to go…’)
Cuarón made his film debut with the romantic comedy Solo con tu pareja and directed the film adaptations of A Little Princess and Great Expectations. He gained much popularity for directing the fantasy film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the dystopian drama Children of Men and many others.
The most challenging aspect for him was directing the psychological thriller miniseries ‘Disclaimer.’ “I realized I’d never done anything overtly narrative. And maybe, OK, I don’t know how to do that.” [TV]”That was part of the motivation,” Cuarón said at the Toronto Film Festival.
He added that television was outside his comfort zone: “I said, guys, I don’t know how to do television. I think it’s too late to learn how to do television. I’m not interested in learning how to do television. I make movies and if [I do] “I’m going to approach this like a movie.”
‘Disclaimer’ is a 2024 psychological thriller miniseries written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renee Knight.
It stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Klein.
“I know how to make movies and I’m not very fast,” Cuarón said of his first conversation about accepting the project. Cuarón worked with his longtime cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, another veteran of the Mexican film industry.
“At least in our collaboration, we’re always exchanging ideas. I’m very involved in his lighting and he’s very involved in my direction. It’s very organic,” Cuarón said.
“‘Disclaimer’ tells the story of Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), an acclaimed journalist who has built her reputation by revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cuarón praised Blanchett as another key collaborator. “She is very involved in each of the processes, with the script that causes rewrites and with the casting. I talked to her about all the possibilities and, if I had doubts, I didn’t make up my mind,” Cuarón added.
He recalled his beginnings as a director alongside Mexican filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
“We love each other. We trust each other and we are brutally and painfully honest with each other. Conversation is not easy when we collaborate and show each other movies. I’m terrified, because I know it can be difficult,” Cuarón said.
“And sometimes I, or the other person, are listening, and in the end you can tell that the other person is listening and in the end is upset, and I myself feel like they didn’t understand anything,” he added.
‘Disclaimer,’ his seven-part psychological thriller, will have its Canadian premiere in Toronto. The Toronto Film Festival continues till September 15, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (ANI)
