Growing a lotus in a pot at home can bring an air of serenity to your garden, balcony or even the interior of your home if the conditions are right. These beautiful aquatic plants, with their large green leaves and delicate flowers, are often associated with purity, beauty and spiritual symbolism in many cultures, especially in India. Here is a detailed guide on how to grow and care for lotus plants in a pot.

1. Choose the right variety

There are several varieties of lotus, but not all are suitable for growing in containers. It is important to choose dwarf or medium-sized lotus varieties for smaller containers. Dwarf varieties such as ‘Momo Botan’ or ‘Baby Doll’ are perfect for container gardening as they grow to a manageable height. These varieties thrive in a small space and flower well.

2. Select the right pot

Lotus plants need a wide, shallow pot to allow their roots to spread out properly. A pot that is at least 40-50 cm wide and 25 cm deep is ideal. Make sure the pot does not have drainage holes because lotus plants are aquatic and need to be submerged in water. If your pot has drainage holes, cover the bottom with heavy plastic to retain water.

3. Choice of soil

The type of soil you use to plant your lotus is crucial. Lotus roots need dense soil to anchor themselves and grow. Use heavy topsoil or garden soil mixed with a little clay. Avoid potting soil, compost, or soil rich in organic matter, as these will float and muck up the water. You can also add sand to create a heavier base.

4. Planting lotus tubers

Once you have prepared the pot and soil, it is time to plant the lotus tubers. Here is how to do it:

Step 1: Fill the pot with the prepared soil, leaving a few inches of space at the top.

Step 2: Gently place the lotus tuber horizontally on the soil surface with the growing tips pointing slightly upward.

Step 3: Cover the tuber lightly with soil, making sure the tips remain above the surface. Do not bury the tuber completely, as this may cause it to rot.

Step 4: Slowly fill the pot with a few inches of water, being careful not to disturb the soil.

5. Positioning and sunlight

Lotus plants need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight to thrive. Place the pot in a sunny spot, such as a balcony, terrace, or outdoor garden. If you’re growing it indoors, place it near a window that receives bright sunlight or under a grow light.

6. Irrigation and maintenance

Since the lotus is an aquatic plant, it needs to remain submerged in water. Keep the water level 5-10 cm above the soil during the growing season. As the plant grows, you can increase the water level.

Change the water periodically: To prevent algae growth, it is a good idea to change the water every two weeks.

Use dechlorinated water: If you use tap water, let it sit for 24 hours before adding it to the pot to allow the chlorine to evaporate. Another option is to use rainwater or distilled water.

7. Fertilizing the lotus plant

Lotus plants need proper nutrition to flourish well. Use a slow-release fertilizer for aquatic plants or aquatic plant tablets designed specifically for lotus plants. Begin fertilizing after the plant shows 4 to 6 leaves, usually about a month after planting. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and avoid over-fertilizing, as it can burn the plant’s roots.

8. Pruning and care

Lotus plants generally require minimal pruning. However, to keep them healthy and looking fresh:

Remove dead leaves and wilted flowers: Trim off yellowing leaves or wilted flowers to encourage new growth.

Control Algae: Keep the water clean by removing debris and controlling algae with regular water changes or adding oxygenating plants.
