Manipur riots, lynching of a former havildar, murder of a tribal woman… Manipur is boiling again – manipur hinsa retired havildar beaten to death tribal woman murdered 11 people died in 9 days

Guwahati: The era of violence has begun once again in Manipur. Since September 1, 11 people have lost their lives in this violence. Following the violence, a clash between angry students and the police broke out in Imphal on Monday. It all started when a retired constable and a woman were killed on Sunday evening. Only after this unrest escalated in the state and large-scale protests began. Manipur’s Raj Bhavan became the epicentre of the protest, where students were demanding action against the culprits and resignation of senior officials.

Police fired tear gas shells at the protesters, injuring many. The protesters also pelted stones, injuring some policemen and security personnel. A security source said that the body of former Havildar Limkholal Mate, a resident of Motbang in Kangpokpi district, was found in Sekmai in Imphal West. He is believed to have been beaten to death. At the same time, Nenjkhol Haukip (50) died due to shrapnel injury after the arson attack at Kangpokpi village in Thangbuh. The retired constable reached Sekmai only on Sunday evening. In the attack, Haukip village in Thangbuh was set ablaze.

The students demonstrated

In view of the worsening situation, the Manipur government ordered closure of schools and colleges on Monday and Tuesday. However, the students violated the bandh and marched towards Raj Bhavan raising slogans like “Manipur Zindabad” and “All incompetent MPs should resign”. They also demanded peace. Carrying placards reading “Save Manipur because we are Indians, otherwise leave Manipur alone”, the protesters demanded the resignation of the DGP and the state security adviser. They also demanded that the control of the Unified Command be transferred from the Union Home Ministry to the Chief Minister and that the Assam Rifles and other central forces be immediately withdrawn from Manipur. The students also appealed to 50 non-Kuki-Zo MLAs to clarify their stand or resign.

The locals organized a demonstration.

Similar protests took place in Thoubal district and thousands of locals staged a massive demonstration to protest against the recent killings of civilians in Kakching district. The ongoing conflict has also seen the use of armed drones and long-range rockets, further adding to the chaos. Manipur police said cadres of militant groups, including those who had signed “suspension of operations” agreements or peace deals with the Centre, were involved in the violence.
