Junior doctors hold firm on strike despite Supreme Court instructions

Case of the doctor from Calcutta, Calcutta: The Supreme Court has directed the striking junior doctors of the state to return to work by 5 pm on Tuesday. Despite this direction from the apex court, the junior doctors are adamant on the strike. Following the Supreme Court’s ultimatum, a marathon meeting of junior doctors was held. After the meeting, a statement was issued saying that despite the Supreme Court’s appeal, their strike will continue. Also, the Swasthya Bhavan campaign was announced on Tuesday. The statement said that the campaign will begin at Karunamoyee at Swasthya Bhawan (Health Department office) in Sector 5 of Salt Lake from 1 o’clock on the day.

The junior doctor said: Wherever the police stop him, he will go on strike.

The young doctors say that wherever the police stops them, they will go on strike. The protest will continue until their demands are met. The statement said that the protest may last for two to three days or more or less. Those participating in the campaign have been asked to be prepared. It has also been said that food etc. is being prepared for the protest.

They demand the resignation of the Director of Health Education and Secretary of Health

On the other hand, the junior doctors have demanded the resignation of Director of Health Education Prof Dr Kaustav Nayak and Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam. Based on this demand, the Swasthya Bhavan campaign has been announced. This decision has been taken by the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front.

On strike after rape of female doctor

It is worth noting that on August 9th RG Kar College of Medicine Junior doctors are on strike after the rape and murder case of a female doctor came to light. Health services have been severely affected by the strike. However, there are senior doctors working in other government medical colleges including RG Kar. They are treating patients in outdoor, indoor and emergency departments.

23 people have died due to the strike of young doctors

During the hearing before the Supreme Court on Monday, advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the state government, told the court that 23 people had died due to the junior doctors’ strike. Following this, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed the striking doctors to return to work by 5 pm on Tuesday.
