Airtel Africa Foundation launches scholarship programme for IIT Madras Zanzibar students

Airtel Africa Foundation has announced the launch of the ‘Airtel Africa Scholarship Programme’ for undergraduate students at IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first overseas campus established by an IIT, the telco said in a statement on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The scholarship aims to support deserving students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT Madras Zanzibar, it added.

The program will benefit 10 undergraduate students for the entire duration of their four-year degree with an initial disbursement of $500,000.

Established in 2024, the Airtel Africa Foundation is dedicated to promoting digital and financial inclusion across Africa, with a key focus on education and environmental protection.

This scholarship is the Foundation’s first initiative to improve educational opportunities for deserving students, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The scholarship is designed to support students from 14 African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, Chad, Congo B, Gabon, Madagascar and Seychelles.

Recipients of this scholarship, known as “Airtel Africa Fellows”, will receive 100% of their university expenses, amounting to $12,000 for the 4-year programme. In addition, eligible students will receive $500 to cover living expenses.
This initiative aims to transform lives, train future leaders and contribute to technological innovation and economic growth in Africa.

Speaking about the scholarship programme, Zanzibar Minister of Education and Vocational Training Lela Mohamed Mussa noted that IITM Zanzibar is charting a “wonderful path” in technical education in the region.

“Providing access to this high-quality education to students from Tanzania and the rest of the continent, who top the selection and testing processes at IITM Zanzibar, through financial assistance, is an important priority for us,” Mussa said.

Airtel Africa Foundation Chairman Olusegun Ogunsanya said the initiative aims to contribute to the creation of a prosperous and sustainable continent.

“We hope to create even more opportunities not only in education, but also in financial and digital inclusion and environmental protection,” Ogunsanya added.

The company also said that as the Chair of the B20 India Action Council on African Economic Integration, Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal has played a pivotal role in promoting global private sector investments in Africa.

Under her leadership in 2023, the council worked to promote dialogue and advance actionable measures to deepen economic ties between global businesses and Africa, which closely aligns with Africa’s economic aspirations, particularly the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Mittal’s leadership initiatives are seen as part of a broader commitment to unlock Africa’s economic potential through long-term strategic investments.

An important milestone in 2023 was India’s historic decision to include the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, consolidating the continent’s importance in the global economic landscape.

In line with India’s growing collaboration, a key development is the expansion of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras into Africa, becoming the first IIT to establish campuses abroad.
