The federal measures adopted by the Canadian government to reduce the influx of foreign students will have a more dramatic impact than expected.
A report by The Globe and Mail, citing an analysis by ApplyBoard, projects that international study permit approvals will fall by almost half in 2024.
India has long been a major source of international students, but the number of students choosing to study in Canada has seen a marked drop this year. “In the first half of this year, study permit approvals from India fell by half,” the report notes.
Recently, Gabriel Miller, president of Universities Canada He said he expects universities to see at least a 45 percent decline in international enrollment this fall.
Universities Canada is a lobbying group representing nearly 100 institutions.
ApplyBoard has predicted that study permit approvals by the end of 2024 could fall to “the mid-200,000s,” the level last seen in 2018 and 2019.
In December last year, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that foreign students must prove they have at least $20,000, more than double the amount previously required, to qualify for Canadian study permits.
In addition, in January of this year, the minister said that the number of international students in Canada “will not grow further” over the next two years.
