KEY POINTS

  • Star Indian bowler impressed in County Championship
  • The 33-year-old was left out of all four teams for the Duleep Trophy.
  • He has never played a Test match for India.

Yuzvendra Chahal I could have been left behind in the pecking order of the Indian cricket team Across all formats, he remains one of the best bowlers in world cricket. The 33-year-old Indian veteran spun a net during the ongoing English County Championship match between Northamptonshire and Derbyshire at the Country Ground in Northampton.

On Tuesday (September 10), Chahal proved to be the difference between the two teams by picking up an impressive five-wicket haul. The 2024 T20 World Cup winner helped his team gain a vital 54-run lead in the first innings. This was only the third five-wicket haul of Chahal’s career in red-ball cricket.

Chahal picked up the big wickets of Wayne Madsen, Aneurin Donald, Zak Chappell, Alex Thomson and Jack Morey as the visitors collapsed from 150-4 to 165 all out.

Chahal is one of two Indians playing for Northampton alongside Prithvi ShawThe star opening batsman, unlike Chahal, has had a game to forget having been dismissed for single-digit scores of 4 and 2 in the two innings.

Will Yuzvendra Chahal be called up for India?

Chahal has expressed his desire to play Test cricket for India in several interviews but has not yet gotten the chance and remains out of action in the longer format of the game. While he has played for India-A on side tours, a call-up to the national team in the longer format has never materialised.

In total, the 33-year-old has played 37 first-class matches in his career, most of them for his home state, Haryana. He has a disappointing record for the Whites, with 97 wickets in 37 matches, at an average of 35.04.

The fact that he has not been picked in any of the four Duleep Trophy teams shows that he is not in the scheme of things for India in red-ball cricket and a debut seems unlikely.

On the other hand, he is one of the best white-ball bowlers the country has ever produced. He is the player who has taken the most wickets for India in T20Is with 96 wickets. He is also the leading wicket-taker in the history of the IPL and the only player in the cash-rich league to take more than 200 scalps. In ODI cricket, Chahal has played 72 matches for India and has 121 dismissals.

Chahal was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad but did not play a single match for the Rohit Sharma-led side. In fact, the veteran spinner has not played a match for India for 13 months in any format, with his last appearance coming in August 2023 in a T20I against the West Indies.
