OpenAI plans to launch “Strawberry,” its reasoning-focused artificial intelligence, as part of its ChatGPT service in the next two weeks, The Information reported Tuesday, citing two people who have tested the model.

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has sparked renewed interest and heavy investment in AI as companies race to capitalize on the lucrative technology to power their products.

The Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company said last week that it has more than 1 million paid users of its commercial products, helped by strong adoption of its chatbot due to its advanced, broad language model.

Strawberry is differentiated from other conversational AI by its ability to “think” before responding, rather than immediately responding to a query, the Information report said.

Reuters had exclusively reported in July that ChatGPT maker OpenAI was working on a novel approach to its AI models in a project codenamed Strawberry.

According to the Information report, while Strawberry is part of ChatGPT, it is a standalone offering. However, it is unclear exactly how it will be offered.

The initial version of Strawberry will only be able to receive and output text, not images, meaning it is not yet multimodal, the report said.

Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
