Anarchist elements created a disturbance at the judges’ residential complex in Diamond Harbour.

Kolkata: Unruly elements forcibly entered the judges’ residence at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas and created a ruckus. The judges have sent a letter to the district judge complaining about the incident. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Registrar of the Calcutta High Court. In the letter, the judges have requested immediate steps to be taken for their security. The letter sent to the District Judge has the signatures of the Additional District Judge of Diamond Harbour and the Additional District Judge (No. 4). District Judge Shubhradeep Mitra said suspicious persons were seen roaming around the judge’s residential compound. This also raises the possibility of collusion between the miscreants and the local police. The judges allege that on the night of September 8, anarchists were seen roaming around their residence. They had tied a cloth over their mouth. Despite being stopped by the security personnel, they forcibly entered the premises. They were also trying to disconnect the electricity connection at the residence. Despite giving information, the police arrived late. The judge and his family members fear for their safety due to this incident. A complaint against a police constable is also lodged in the letter. It is feared that the miscreants were planning to cut the electricity connection in the compound to create fear in the judiciary and hamper its functioning, especially after the recent court orders related to POCSO cases. After getting information about the incident, senior police officers from Diamond Harbour district visited the judges’ residential compound. The footage from the CCTV cameras installed there is being examined. Searches were also conducted at some places to arrest the accused. The police officer against whom the complaint has been lodged has shown cause. Also, the post of Sub-Inspector, who is responsible for security at the judges’ residence, has been closed. One person has been arrested in the case. A meeting of judges, administrative and police officials was also held in the Additional District Judge’s chamber regarding the incident. Police have said that there was no attack on the residence, but the possibility of it has been raised. SP Rahul Goswami said that the police have registered an FIR in the matter and started investigation. Some people have been seen roaming around the residence with cloths tied over their faces. One person has been arrested. A metal detector has been installed in front of the residence. The number of police personnel has been increased to nine. There will be a police picket in front of the residence from 8 pm to 8 am. The Calcutta High Court should take strict action in this matter. Because it is an encroachment on the independence of the judiciary. It is natural that allegations are being made that there is no rule of law in this state. This is very unfortunate. Ashok Ganguly, former Supreme Court judge
