Homeless man stabs 24-year-old woman 46 times in US furniture store

Washington: A college student was brutally murdered after a homeless man stabbed her 46 times in Los Angeles, US, according to reports. Officials have recovered an audio recording of the incident in which the 34-year-old defendant can be heard promising not to hurt her.

The incident occurred in 2022, when Shawn Laval Smith was “looking for a woman alone” and encountered Brianna Kupfer at the furniture store where he worked, prosecutors said.

They added that when Shawn entered the store, the 24-year-old texted her friend saying she felt uncomfortable because of a man who was inside the store.

Nearly 20 minutes after the message, Kupfer’s body was found on the floor of the store covered in blood. The man fled the scene after stabbing Kupfer.

The audio was recorded by Smith, which was key to his conviction for the murder. In the clip, he is heard saying “I’m not going to hurt you” while ordering the woman to “get on the ground.”

Meanwhile, in the clip, a woman can be heard saying: “It’s over, it’s over, it’s over, it’s over.”

Prosecutors said Smith had planned to attack a woman alone and left her home with the intent to kill.

Kupfer’s lawyer called him Smith, a Hannibal Lecter-type sicko who liked the idea of butchering women, the New York Post reported.

“This man hated women. It’s probably easier to sleep at night thinking there’s something wrong with him than to face the truth that this man was on a crusade to hunt, destroy and kill for the mere fact that she was a woman,” the lawyer said.

According to local media reports, police found an audio disc and a filleting knife, typically used to cut and prepare fish.

The knife is said to have been slightly bent after the frenzied attack, and DNA evidence helped prove Smith’s guilt.
