Football giants Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC will lock horns in the opening match of the 2024-2024 Indian Super League on Friday, September 13. The 11th edition of India’s top-tier football league will witness a record 13 teams battling it out for glory.
Among the major changes, Mohammedan Sporting Club is all set for its much-awaited debut in the ISL. The popular Kolkata football club will join favourites Mohun Bagan and East Bengal to revive the historic football rivalry.
Mohammedan secured promotion to the ISL by winning the I-League title last season. However, the ISL will not implement a promotion and relegation system for the 2024-25 season despite a strong recommendation from the Football Confederation. Teams will be promoted from the I-League but no team will be relegated from the top flight this season.
With 13 teams competing in 2024-25, fans are expected to witness a highly competitive season. Mohun Bagan Super Giants remain the favourites to defend their title despite their shock defeat to NorthEast United in the 2024 Durand Cup final earlier this month.
East Bengal have signed centre-back Anwar Ali from Delhi FC in the biggest signing of the season. But both the player and the team are facing different sanctions (a two-season transfer ban for East Bengal and a four-month ban for Ali) for breaching transfer rules.
ISL 2024-25 Schedule
In the first matchday, fans will witness the opening match between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on September 13. In another thrilling match, Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru FC will host fan favourite East Bengal at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday evening.
