For all whisky lovers, the Scotch whisky masters this summer unveiled the results of the best liquids of 2024. The annual blind tasting competition featured experienced judges from the UK and whisky enthusiasts who came from different parts of the world to attend this annual event.
The palates judging the Scotch Whisky Masters competition offered a long list of deserving and worthy spirits. Interestingly, a total of 30 expressions earned the top honour of “Master” across all spirit styles, including blended, single grain, blended malt and single malt.
The winner of the competition is Royal Brackla, the 212-year-old distillery that managed to take home two Mastery Medals for single malts from the Highlands, which are typically aged between 19 and 30 years. The two single malts included a 25-year-old bottle finished exclusively in PX and a 21-year-old bottle finished in a combination of Oloroso Palo Cortado and Pedro Ximénez casks.
The first (25 years old) incorporates rich notes of dark fruits, dried figs, leather and raisins, and the second (21 years old) presents delicious hints of cocoa, cinnamon and maple syrup. Both bottled at the same alcohol content, they manage to offer a satiny finish on the palate.
While it will be difficult to find a bottle of Royal Brackla for your home bar due to it being exported in limited quantities, you can easily find these bottles on US shelves for around $600 each.
Other big winners of the 2024 Scotch whisky competition include GlenAllachie, which took home a Master for its peat-smoked Meikle Toir Sherry expression. The Bacardi-owned Scottish company took home Masters for Aultmore’s 12-year-old Oloroso Sherry Cask and a 13-year-old from Speyside Maltmaker.
The tasting competition started with un-aged blended whiskies and they managed to set the bar high for the rest of the day. Sir Edward Finest received a gold medal for its delightfully balanced notes. Interestingly, the most expensive and blended section managed to get two mastery awards and two gold awards from the judges. The best brands were Johnnie Walker High Rye and Johnnie Walker Blue Label, where the rye whisky was judged for having delicious aromas.
