Heavy to very heavy rain warning in Uttarakhand, red alert issued, schools closed in 9 districts

Rain in Uttarakhand: The rain that began early in the morning in Dehradun continued intermittently throughout the day as the district administration ordered closure of all schools as a precautionary measure in view of the Met Department’s ‘red alert’ for rain. Schools in Chamoli district were also kept closed. It has been raining since morning in the hilly areas of Garhwal and Kumaon regions. The first snowfall of the season also occurred in the Garhwal region in the high Himalayas. A scientist at the Dehradun Meteorological Centre said snowfall has been reported in hills above 5,000 metres in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

Hotel owners showed generosity to pilgrims

The hotel owners at Gaurikund have decided to charge only one day’s rent from pilgrims stranded due to rain on the Kedarnath trekking route. Gaurikund Vyapar Mandal said that the Sonprayag-Gaurikund road was closed due to heavy rain and due to this, passengers have to stay longer in Gaurikund but they will be charged the fee for only one day.

Districts warned of heavy rains

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has issued instructions to all district magistrates to take all precautions in view of the warning of heavy rainfall issued by the Meteorological Department.

Heavy rains are forecast in these districts

The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chamoli, Dehradun, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar and on Friday in Dehradun, Pauri, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar. The forecast has been issued for Singh Nagar and Haridwar. The authority said that due to this there is a possibility of waterlogging in plain areas and landslides in hilly areas, so extreme caution should be exercised.
