Indian airlines suffer delays in August, Akasa leads with 71% punctuality: DGCA

Indian domestic airlines carried 1.31 million passengers in the month of August, as per the data provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). In a statement, the DGCA said, “Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-August 2024 were 1054.66 lakhs as against 1006.16 lakhs during the corresponding period of the previous year. Thus, an annual growth of 4.82% and a monthly growth of 5.70% is recorded.”

India’s largest airline in terms of market share and fleet size, IndiGo, retained the top spot with a market share of 62.4%, up 0.4% month-on-month. IndiGo carried 81.90 lakh passengers in August, the highest of any airline. With a month-on-month increase of 0.4%, Vistara’s market share increased by 0.3%. Air India carried 19.29 lakh passengers and Vistara 13.54 lakh passengers.

Tata Group’s low-cost carrier Air India Express occupied the fourth position in terms of market share, with 4.7%, down 0.1% month-on-month. AI Express carried 577,000 passengers. In total, Tata Group airlines had a cumulative market share of 29.4% and carried 386,000 passengers.

Akasa Air held the fifth-highest market share at 4.5%, down 0.2% MoM, but up 2% compared to SpiceJet. Akasa carried 5.92 lakh passengers. SpiceJet’s market share registered a huge drop of just 2.3%, down nearly 1% MoM. SpiceJet, which is plagued by a financial crisis and grounding of several aircraft, carried just 3.2 lakh passengers.

In terms of One Time Yield (OTP), none of the airlines had an OTP of 80%. Akasa Air ranked first in terms of OTP with 71.2%. Akasa ranked first in terms of OTP for the sixth time in the current calendar year. Vistara and AI Express had the second and third highest OTP at 68.6% and 66.8% respectively. IndiGo and Air India’s OTP in the month of August was 66%. SpiceJet’s OTP was the lowest in the industry at 31%.
