A 14-year-old girl named Lilly, who experienced flu-like symptoms for three months, has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Kidney failurea disease typically associated with older people. The diagnosis came as a shock to her family, with her father, Christopher, describing it as “any parent’s worst nightmare,” not knowing how things would turn out.
Lilly now lives with the disease and undergoes dialysis several times a week to manage her condition. However, her mission is to raise awareness so that other young people do not suffer to the same extent. Reflecting on her experience, Lilly shared that she was “somewhat relieved” when doctors decided to put her in a coma due to the intense pain she was feeling at the time.
He spent three days in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he remained in a coma. Now, although dialysis is helping to prevent his condition from worsening, doctors have told him that at some point he will need a kidney transplant.
Despite her circumstances, Lilly is determined to help others in her situation. She has been in touch with Yeovil MP Adam Dance and the First Minister’s office, and is working with the National Kidney Federation to raise awareness of end-stage kidney disease among young people. “I want to make sure that children like me and others on dialysis don’t feel so alone,” she said.
Christopher expressed his pride in his daughter, saying: “It’s been a nightmare not knowing how things would turn out, but she’s been a beacon of strength. Knowing that her passion is to become a kidney specialist and help children like her is truly inspiring.”
End-stage kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood. This condition can lead to dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and toxins building up in the body. People with ESRD need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
End-stage renal failure, also known as renal disease, occurs when the kidneys can no longer function effectively to meet the body’s needs. Some common signs and symptoms include:
– Severe fatigue and weakness,
– Swelling (edema) in the legs, ankles, feet or face due to fluid retention,
– Difficulty breathing caused by fluid buildup in the lungs,
-Nausea and vomiting,
– Loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss,
– Itching (pruritus) due to the accumulation of waste products in the blood,
– Changes in urine output, such as very little or no urine output,
– Muscle cramps and spasms,
– Confusion or difficulty concentrating,
– Persistent high blood pressure despite medications,
– Metallic taste in the mouth,
– Sleep disorders, including restless legs syndrome or insomnia,
– Chest pain due to fluid around the heart (pericarditis).
