Water leaks from Taj Mahal’s main dome after rains; ASI says there is no damage to the monument

The main dome of the Taj Mahal suffered a water leak due to incessant rain for the past three days, which flooded a garden in the compound.

The purported video of the sunken garden at the Taj Mahal premises went viral on Thursday, catching the attention of tourists.

However, a senior official of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Agra Circle, said that there is a leak in the main dome due to seepage and there is no damage.

Speaking about the leak in the main dome of the Taj Mahal, Rajkumar Patel, director general of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Agra circle, told PTI: “Yes, we have witnessed the leak in the main dome of the Taj Mahal. After that, when we checked, it was due to seepage and there was no damage to the main dome. We have checked the main dome through a drone camera.”

On Thursday night, a supposed 20-second video went viral on the Internet, showing one of the monument’s gardens submerged in

rainwater. It caught the attention of tourists, who visited the Taj Mahal and many took videos of it.

A resident, who works as a government-approved tourist guide, said the Taj Mahal is the pride of Agra and the entire nation, adding that it provides employment to hundreds of locals and those working in the tourism industry.

“The monument needs to be properly maintained because for people in the tourism industry, it is the only hope,” said Monika Sharma, a government-approved tour guide.

Agra witnessed incessant rain for the last three days due to which waterlogging problems could be seen in most parts of the city.

One of the national highways was blocked by rainwater, crops were submerged under rainwater and posh localities of the city witnessed water suffocating due to continuous rains.

The Agra administration has ordered closure of all schools due to rain.
