Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix race on Saturday 14 September. The Ferrari driver emerged fastest in qualifying to beat team-mate Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to take pole at the Baku City Circuit.
In the biggest news of qualifying, title contender Lando Norris finished 17th in a major blow for him and McLaren in the Drivers’ Championship in 2024. The British driver posted a best lap of 1m43.609s and failed to qualify for the Q2 session in a surprise to fans.
“We have a long race ahead of us, we have good tyres on the bank, I’m still hopeful that we can get a good result,” Norris told Sky Sports after qualifying. “I think the car is quick. It’s a bit frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Following a memorable win at the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago, Leclerc continued his fastest lap streak on Saturday. He set a 1m41.365s to edge out Piastri for pole, while Sainz took third to boost Ferrari’s bid for the Constructors’ Championship, where it sits just 39 points behind leaders Red Bull Racing.
Reigning champion Max Verstappen’s poor run of form continues as he starts from sixth on the grid for Sunday’s main race. Team-mate Sergio Perez claimed fourth ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, who has struggled for form in recent races.
