A revival of the Afro-Asia Cup is on the horizon, and this is not the first time it has happened, but for that to happen a lot of things need to go right. A three-match ODI series between the African XI and the Asian XI was held in 2005, followed by the 2007 series, which was the only time such a thing was held. It was supposed to resume in 2009, but it didn’t happen and after 15 years, it seems that some efforts are underway to bring back the tournament with the current BCCI president and the newly elected ICC president Jay Shah on board.

A report by Cricbuzz claimed that Jay Shah was interested in reviving the Afro-Asia Cup as a biennial tournament. However, with Shah taking over the top job at the ICC and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expected to take up the role of ACC chief, the talks are set to take a bit longer than expected.

“We have been trying to revive the Afro-Asia Cup. Jay was on board and Mahinda Vallipuram (director of Malaysia Cricket and current ICC chief) was actively involved in the discussions,” said Sumod Damodar, an ICC veteran. Damodar, currently Botswana’s director of cricket, was one of the first minds behind the Afro-Asia Cup.

It’s exciting news for fans to have the opportunity to witness someone like… Virat Kohli, jasprit bumrah, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi playing together, however, with so many changes happening in the front offices, a lot of things have to go right for everything to work again.

Asia XI and Africa XI drew 1–1 in the three-match ODI series, with the decider being rained out. The subsequent edition was dominated by the Asian team, which featured players like Shahid Afridi, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Sanath Jayasuriya among others. Asia XI won the 2007 ODI Cup 3–0.
