Kenya says it has awarded the Adani Group a contract to build power lines

Kenya has awarded a public-private partnership concession to build Power transmission lines To India Adani Group and a unit of the African Development Bankaccording to an economic adviser to the country’s president.

The concession is worth $1.3 billion, David Ndii, President William Ruto’s chief economic adviser, said in a post on X.

“The government through KETRACO has granted PPP grants to Adani “They are hiring their project teams. The cost of these transmission lines is $1.3 billion which we do not have to borrow,” Ndii wrote.

Africa50 is a branch of the African Development Bank dedicated to infrastructure investment.

The Adani Group and the African Development Bank did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside normal business hours.

Another plan by the Kenyan government to lease the country’s main international airport to the Adani Group has sparked anger among Kenyans and also triggered a strike by the country’s aviation workers. The plan involves leasing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Adani Group for 30 years, in exchange for a $1.85 billion investment by Adani for the airport’s expansion. The Adani group operates seven airports in India and has often faced criticism from Indian opposition parties for currying favors from ruling governments. Indian officials and the Adani group have denied such allegations.

Kenya is struggling with a high debt burden accumulated over years of infrastructure spending.

A government proposal to raise taxes to generate extra money needed to pay off debt sparked deadly protests this summer and forced the government to rescind the proposal.
