Toronto: An Indian student, who had recently completed his master’s degree and was looking for a job in Canada, drowned in a lake on his birthday. According to reports, A. Praneeth, a native of Ranga Reddy district of Hyderabad, had gone on a vacation with friends and his brother to a cottage near Clear Lake in Canada on Saturday.

Praneeth had moved to Canada in 2019 to study, followed by his elder brother in 2022.

A. Ravi, the victim’s father, said Praneeth went swimming with his friends and brother on Sunday morning but did not return to shore. The devastated father said he received the tragic news of Praneeth’s death from one of his son’s friends. The local police were notified and Ravi said it took rescue teams more than 10 hours to reach the lake. The body was recovered in the afternoon.

Family seeks government help

The bereaved family has appealed to the government for help in bringing Praneeth’s body back to India.

Praneeth’s father expressed his deep grief and highlighted the tragic irony of his son’s birthday celebration turning into a day of mourning. The family is seeking support to expedite the process of repatriating Praneeth’s body to Hyderabad.

“On Saturday, both friends went to the lake to celebrate Praneeth’s birthday. On Sunday, they went for a swim. They all returned, but the youngest (Praneth) did not,” the grieving father told reporters.

She was hit by a speeding car while crossing the road in Florida. Media reports also claimed that she had celebrated her 25th birthday on May 11.

Before that, another Indian student died in a bicycle accident in the US on May 23. The deceased, Belem Atchyuth, was a State University of New York (SUNY) student who hailed from Andhra Pradesh. Three Indian-origin students were killed and two others injured in a devastating car accident in the city of Alpharetta in the US state of Georgia earlier that month.
