New Delhi: India on Monday issued a strong condemnation of Iran’s Supreme Leader’s recent remarks on minorities in the country, calling the statement “ill-informed and unacceptable.”
“We strongly condemn the comments made by Iran’s Supreme Leader on minorities in India. They are incorrect and unacceptable. Countries making comments on minorities are advised to examine their own track record before making comments on others,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
The ministry also urged countries commenting on the treatment of minorities to review their own records before criticizing others. “Countries commenting on minorities are advised to examine their own records before making comments about others,” the ministry added.
Regarding X, Khamenei stressed that a genuine Islamic identity involves recognizing these struggles and calling for unity within the Muslim community.
“We cannot consider ourselves Muslims if we ignore the suffering of a Muslim in Myanmar, Gaza, India or anywhere else,” he wrote.
This is not the first time that Khamenei has spoken out about minorities in India. In 2019, he responded to the Indian government’s decision to repeal Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir by expressing concern about the situation of Muslims in the region.
“We are concerned about the situation of Muslims in Kashmir. We have good relations with India, but we hope that the Indian government will adopt a fair policy towards the noble people of Kashmir and avoid oppression and harassment of Muslims in this region,” he said.
Recently, India and Iran have strengthened their partnership by signing a major long-term agreement to operate the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal.
This agreement, which was observed by the ministers of both countries, highlights the strategic importance of the Chabahar port pact. The agreement aims to improve regional connectivity and streamline trade routes between India, Iran and Afghanistan, offering an alternative to traditional routes passing through Pakistan .
