Viral fame turns dangerous for a baby pygmy hippo in Thailand

Moo-Deng, a two-month-old pygmy hippo baby from Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo, has taken the internet by storm. Beloved by millions around the world, she has become a viral sensation, gaining followers from around the world on social media platforms such as X, Facebook and Instagram. While her newfound fame has brought joy to many, it has also had unexpected and worrying consequences.

The adorable hippo, born in July, has doubled attendance at the zoo near Pattaya thanks to his celebrity status. However, some visitors, eager for his attention, have resorted to extreme measures, leading to worrying behaviour. Videos have emerged online showing tourists throwing objects at Moo-Deng and even pouring water on him while he sleeps.

Zookeeper Atthapon Nundee never imagined Moo-Deng’s fame would spread beyond Thailand.

“The moment I saw Moo-Deng being born, I set out to make her famous, but I never expected it to spread overseas. I thought she might be famous in Thailand, but not internationally,” Nundee told a British newspaper.

Sadly, not all the attention has been positive. The behaviour of some visitors has crossed the line and the zoo has been forced to intervene to protect its beloved resident. “These behaviours are not only cruel but also dangerous,” said Narongwit Chodchoi, director of the zoo, in an official statement. “We must protect these animals and ensure they have a safe and comfortable environment.”

To combat the problem, the zoo has increased security around Moo-Deng’s enclosure, installing surveillance cameras and threatening legal action against anyone who mistreats her. The zoo has also put out an appeal to visitors, encouraging them to come when the baby hippo is naturally awake and active.

Moo-Deng’s story highlights the darker side of viral fame, where even innocent animals can suffer from excessive attention. While millions of people are drawn to her online videos, it’s important to remember that she is still a baby who needs care, respect and protection.

For those hoping to visit this internet sensation, remember to treat Moo-Deng with kindness and appreciate her from a safe and respectful distance.
