Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Monday slammed Tehran over Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s recent remarks on Muslims in India. India issued a statement condemning the remarks, saying, “We strongly deplore the remarks made by Iran’s Supreme Leader on minorities in India. They are incorrect and unacceptable.”
In its statement, the Ministry of External Affairs also advised countries making statements on minorities in India to examine their track record. The statement reads: “Countries making comments on minorities are advised to examine their own track record before making comments on others.”
India’s statement came hours after Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei said that one cannot consider oneself a Muslim if one is oblivious to the suffering of Muslims in Myanmar, Gaza and India. In a message on X, Khamenei said: “The attempt of the enemies of Islam has been to make us indifferent to the unique identity called the ‘Islamic Ummah’, one cannot consider oneself a Muslim and at the same time be oblivious to the sufferings that a Muslim undergoes in Myanmar, in Gaza, in India or anywhere else.”
Khamenei made the remarks as he faced a backlash at home for limiting women’s rights and imposing the burqa and hijab. Hours earlier, thousands of women took to the streets in Tehran to mark the second anniversary of the death of Mahasa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died after being detained by Iran’s morality police for not wearing the hijab. Amini’s death sparked a series of protests. Over time, she became a symbol of resistance by women’s rights activists.
