Punjab Kings appoint Ricky Ponting as their new head coach

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchisee Punjab Kings (PBKS) has appointed Ricky Ponting as its new head coach. Ponting had parted ways with Delhi Capitals at the end of the 2024 IPL season.

According ESPNCRICINFO The former Australian captain has signed a multi-year contract with PBKS.

Prior to serving as the head coach of Delhi Capitals, Ponting had worked with Mumbai Indians in the same capacity from 2014 to 2016. Earlier this year, Ponting also made his foray into Major League Cricket (MLC) when he was chosen as the head coach of Washington Freedom. With Ponting as the coach, Washington Freedom won their first MLC title losing just one game in the 2024 MLC.

Last season, Punjab was coached by Trevor Bayliss. The team had a disappointing run as they finished ninth in the ten-team tournament. Ponting will be PBKS’s sixth head coach in seven years.

The Kings have had a disappointing run in the last 10 years as they have failed to qualify for the play-offs even once in this period. In 2014, the team under the leadership of former Australian player George Bailey qualified for the finals but lost the title match against Kolkata Knight Riders. In the last six seasons, the team has failed to finish above the fifth position in the IPL points tally.

With Shikhar Dhawan announcing his retirement from cricket last month, Punjab will head into IPL 2025 with a new captain-coach duo at the helm of affairs.
