WhatsApp to introduce Instagram-like feature: Check out the details

WhatsApp is constantly trying to offer innovative features and updates to its users and keep up with the Meta-verse. Now, a recent report suggests that the popular messaging app is planning to introduce an Instagram-like feature called mention in status that allows users to mention their contacts in their status updates.

With this feature, users can tag a particular contact in their status updates and share an instant mention notification with a specifically mentioned person. A mention notification will make it easier for users to engage with their intended audience and re-share the status. According to the report, this feature is still in the testing phase and has been launched for beta testers.

WhatsApp has designed a specific button for the use of this feature. Users will find this button on the caption bar when they try to share images and videos through status updates. This option will be accessible to users before posting the status, so they can choose the contacts they want to mention in the status. Just like on Instagram, when users mention a contact, the mentioned contact will receive an instant notification notifying them that they have been mentioned in a status update.

Additionally, they will also receive a WhatsApp text message from the user notifying them about their mention in a status update. We should know that these mentions will be exclusive to the concerned parties, so other viewers of the status update will not be able to see the mentioned contacts. Notification alerts and text messages will only be sent to the person mentioned. This will ensure discreet interaction as the mentions are not publicly viewable.

Additionally, regardless of the sender’s privacy settings, the mentioned people will automatically receive the status update, meaning they will never miss important status updates that mention specific contacts as they will always be added as recipients of the status update. Like Instagram, the mentioned people will be able to re-share the status update with their audience via a new re-share tab within the status screen, expanding the reach of the content. However, unlike Instagram, if a mentioned person re-shares the status update, the identity of the original sender will remain hidden.
