Apple is expanding access to a new software update that integrates artificial intelligence into its Siri virtual assistant, automating several tasks in the coming months. iPhone 16which is scheduled for release on Friday.
The update, which became available on Thursday for users testing Apple’s software, is expected to roll out to all iPhone Next month, iPhone 16 owners will get access to the latest version. Currently, only two premium iPhones released last year have the advanced processor needed to support the AI-powered features in the update, but that’s set to change with the launch of four new iPhone 16 models.
Which models will receive the update?
All iPhone 16 models, priced from $800 to $1,200, are designed to handle Apple’s new artificial intelligence technology, dubbed “Apple Intelligence.” This brand aims to establish Apple apart from competitors like Samsung and Google, which already introduced similar AI features in their smartphones earlier this year.
Apple is touting these AI capabilities as a key selling point for the iPhone 16, and the early release of the trial version could potentially encourage consumers to buy the new models.
Initially, the AI technology will only be available in US English, but there are plans to expand to localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK in December. Support for other languages and expansion to more countries is expected in 2024. The testing of the AI software follows the release of iOS 18, Apple’s latest mobile operating system.
With the update to iOS 18.1, Siri is expected to become more conversational and visually dynamic, with a bright rotating light on the screen when it responds to requests. While Apple promises improvements to Siri’s ability to perform tasks and reduce confusion, full integration with other apps won’t be available until a future update, with no release date set.
AI features will also help with writing and proofreading tasks, summarize emails and documents, and offer photo editing tools. However, some features, such as the ability to create custom emojis or generate imaginative images, are not yet included in the initial update. Apple also plans to integrate from OpenAI ChatGPT for greater functionality.
Apple’s AI features will be supported on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max thanks to their advanced chips. The update will also bring spatial video recording to these models, which can be viewed with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which costs $3,500.
However, AI capabilities won’t be available on many older iPhones still in use, a limitation that investors hope could boost demand for the new models. This optimism has helped Apple’s stock rise more than 15% since the company unveiled its AI strategy in June, adding $500 billion to its market value. Analysts predict that this surge in demand could push Apple’s market valuation above $4 trillion within the next year.
