What is healthy aging?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy aging as “the process of developing and maintaining functional capacity that enables well-being in old age.”

Functional capacity refers to the capabilities that enable people to engage in activities they value. This includes a person’s ability to:

  • Meet basic needs;
  • Learning, growing and making decisions;
  • Be mobile;
  • Build and maintain relationships; and
  • Contribute to society.

To maintain these capabilities and meet the demands of healthy aging, such as meeting basic needs and maintaining meaningful relationships, regular, moderate physical exercise is essential, as it offers mental benefits and improves overall physical health.

Three exercises to slide into your golden years

Nature walks: If your parents or grandparents have led a sedentary lifestyle, using age as an excuse, now is the time to educate them on the importance of staying active and encourage them to take at least one morning or evening walk. A mindful walk can reduce the risk of heart attacks, strengthen muscles and bones, and improve sleep quality.

Yoga: Have you noticed that your elderly parents or grandparents have difficulty maintaining balance when walking or doing everyday activities? Yoga has been shown to be effective for seniors who want to improve their balance. Chair yoga and tree pose are especially beneficial for improving flexibility, balance, and endurance.

Cycling: If you know how to ride a bike, this is another great exercise to promote healthy aging. Cycling not only provides a fun way to connect with nature, but it also strengthens muscles and increases flexibility.
