Ashneer Grover’s brother-in-law arrested in Rs 81 crore fraud case in BharatPe

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Economic Offences Branch (EOW) on Friday arrested Deepak Gupta, a member of the family of Ashneer GroverFormer CEO and co-founder of bharatpein connection with allegations of misappropriation of funds from the fintech firm. Gupta will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) at Saket Court, Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police, news agency ANI confirmed.

Who is Deepak Gupta?

Deepak Gupta is the husband of Madhuri Grover’s sister. Madhuri Grover, who is married to Ashneer Grover, was dismissed from her position as the head of controls at BharatPe. Gupta was arrested on the night of September 19.

Notably, BharatPe had filed a criminal complaint in December 2022 against five accused – Ashneer Grover, Madhuri Grover, Shwetank Jain (Madhuri’s brother), Suresh Jain (Ashneer’s father-in-law) and Deepak Gupta (Ashneer and Madhuri’s brother-in-law).

What is the case against Ashneer Grover and his family members?

In May 2023, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) filed an FIR against BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain and their family members Deepak Gupta, Suresh Jain and Shwetank Jain in connection with a Rs 81 crore fraud case.

Last month, the EOW made its first arrest in the case, detaining Amit Kumar Bansal on allegations of being part of non-existent companies that received Rs 72 crore in payments from the then directors of BharatPe between 2019 and 2021.

BharatPe has accused Grover and his family of causing approximately Rs 81.3 crore in losses to the company through illegitimate payments to fictitious HR consultants, inflated payments through intermediary vendors linked to the accused, fraudulent transactions related to input tax credits, payments to Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities, illegal payments to travel agencies, forged invoices by Jain and destruction of evidence.
