A former Google employee working as a process inventory associate in Canada has sparked discussions on the difficulties faced by Indian professionals while transitioning into the Canadian job market (first spotted by TOI).
He digital marketing expert, who previously worked in India for over three years, expressed frustration at his current annual salary of CAD 17,500 (approximately ₹10.78 lakhs).
She shared her experience in a recent video interview with Piyush Monga, a digital creator, which has since gone viral on Instagram, receiving over 2,000 likes.
The young professional, dissatisfied with his salary, expressed concern about the undervaluation of Indian work experience in Canada. “Obviously, no one is happy. You can barely survive on that amount of money,” he said when asked about his salary. Despite his previous experience in digital marketing, Canadian employers have not taken his work experience in India into account. “They think if you have experience in India, it’s not going to count.”
He went on to highlight that despite being overqualified for some positions, Canadian employers are prioritising local candidates. “They prefer to look only for Canadian candidates and do not consider Indian professionals,” he explained. This sentiment reflects a growing frustration among skilled Indian workers, who feel marginalised in the Canadian labour market due to the lack of recognition of their international experience.
The video also comes in the wake of recent policy changes by the government led by Justin Trudeau. Canadian Governmentwhich have made it difficult for international students and professionals to access job opportunities in the country. These changes include increased financial requirements, reduced working hours for students, and a cap on student admissions. In response, several Indian students have reportedly protested, urging the Canadian government to reconsider its stance.
The debate sparked by the interview highlights the challenges faced by many Indian professionals when seeking employment in Canadaparticularly with regard to salary expectations and the perception that their international experience is undervalued. The situation highlights the need for a more inclusive approach to recognizing global talent in Canada’s workforce.
