Two charter flights with more than 450 Russian travelers arrive in Goa at the start of the tourist season

The tourist season in Goa officially began on Wednesday (October 2) with the arrival of two chartered flights from Russia, carrying a total of 488 passengers, according to the Goa Tourism Department. The tourists were welcomed by Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte at the Manohar International Airport in Mopa following the end of the southwest monsoon season.

A flight from Moscow arrived at 9am with 349 passengers, followed shortly after by another from Yekaterinburg with 210 travellers, an official told PTI. Khaunte welcomed the visitors and noted that this year beach huts were established well before the tourist influx, a significant change from previous seasons. He highlighted that Goa has long been a preferred destination for British and Russian travelers, noting that last season more than 10 million visitors traveled to the state.

He noted that while Goa is known for its beaches, it is attracting more and more interest in its hinterland due to the regenerative tourism initiative launched by his department.

“Tourists, including international travelers, want to explore the greener Goa and plan to spend days on the sunny beaches,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, at the 12th edition of the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM), being held in Kochi, experts said that preference for environmentally sustainable practices, experiential travel and significant spending on self-care are the latest trends in the global tourism market.

During a seminar on ‘Evolution of Tourism Trends’ at KTM 2024 held here on Willingdon Island, experts opined that efficiency and personalization are most important for travelers.

Commenting on the emerging trends, Dipak Deva, CEO of SITA, said sustainable travel products will influence the choices of tourists, whose spending on self-care in the tourism sector will quadruple by 2027.

According to him, travelers will prioritize experiential travel over everyday luxuries and Generation AI will impact areas such as developer efficiency, customer service, reputation management and industry performance advertising.

“The growth is driven by the global pursuit of net-zero emissions and increased investments in carbon capture technologies. Europe is expected to be the largest market for carbon offsets during this period,” Deva said, according to PTI.

Delving into global trends, he said families are looking for scenic retreats rather than urban adventures, with scenic beaches and countryside being the best options. The popularity of solo travel has increased and the Google search for “Solo Travel” will double by 2023.

For Kerala, he suggested identifying new tourist destinations in each district to provide the feel of experiential tourism to the visitors.
