IIT Delhi signs MoU with IAF to promote innovative technologies for aviation textiles

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and the Indian Air Force Headquarters (HQ) Maintenance Command at Nagpu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The goal of this collaboration is to advance innovative technologies for aviation textiles.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean (R&D), IIT Delhiand Group Captain Prashant Pathak (Commander-in-Chief 16 BRD, AF) in the presence of Prof. R. Alagirusamy, HoD, Textile and Fiber Engg. Department, IIT Delhi, and Prof. Bipin Kumar, Project Coordinator, IIT Delhi, Group Captain Asit Kumar (Chief Planning and Production 16 BRD, AF) and Wing Commander Arun Manohar (Chief Quality Assurance 16 BRD, AF ).

As per the MoU, IIT Delhi and Indian Air Force will cooperate, collaborate and promote research and development in areas of obsolescence management, self-reliance, upgrades and digitalization through indigenization in the field of quality textiles aeronautics.

Areas of interest for collaboration include:

  1. Selection of raw materials (textile/fabric) for various parachute and safety equipment.
  2. Development of modern technologies/equipment for technical testing of textiles/fabrics and the latest standards available for incorporation into product designs related to parachutes and safety equipment.
  3. Implementation of AI/robotics or imaging technologies for quality acceptance checks of textile raw materials/fabrics/finished products.
  4. Innovate machine learning-based imaging technology of finished products, such as pilot parachutes/brake parachutes or cargo parachute canopies, associated harnesses and crew restraint systems, etc., received from field units for repair .
  5. Design and development, reliability studies, simulation studies, life extension studies of parachutes and associated accessories.

This partnership was necessary to address the growing demand for indigenization of the Indian defense sector. nProf. Bipin Kumar, Project Coordinator, Department of Textile and Fiber Engineering, IIT Delhi, shared the partnership between IIT Delhi and HQ Maintenance. nagpurIt is expected to contribute to India’s self-reliance in defense technology.
