Kia Carnival and EV launch: CEO Gwanggu Lee gives insight into the road ahead

At Kia’s much-awaited launch event on October 3, the company’s India MD and CEO Gwang Gu Lee gave a glimpse of the road ahead. Kia India plans to launch its first mass-market electric vehicle next year, aiming to reach 4 lakh annual sales in the Indian market by 2030, it revealed.

Kia India launched the EV9 electric SUV for Rs 1.3 crore and the Carnival limousine for Rs 63.9 lakh. Both will be imported as Completely Built Units (CBU).

“Next year we plan to introduce an electric model in the mass segment,” Lee said in an interview with news agency PTI.

Kia India aims to strengthen its presence in the sports utility vehicle segment but will not enter the micro SUV market. The company hopes to achieve 4 lakh unit sales annually in India by 2030, making it Kia’s third largest market globally.

Lee said Kia India is undergoing a transformation strategy aimed at redefining the automotive experience while maintaining core values. “Kia’s transformation 2.0 aims to redefine the way cars are conventionally perceived, while keeping the cores intact,” he said.

Kia India National Sales and Marketing Director Hardeep Singh Brar mentioned that the company expects to end this year with sales of 2.5 lakh units and is targeting 3 lakh units next year. Brar also expressed optimism about the upcoming holiday season, anticipating an increase in sales to offset recent slowdowns.
