Indian travel platforms resume bookings for Maldives

Travel technology platform EaseMyTrip has announced the resumption of flight bookings to the Maldives, following the improvement of diplomatic relations between India and the island nation. The company had suspended these reservations in January due to a diplomatic dispute.

In June, EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti addressed the issue surrounding the resumption of bookings, revealing that “some bookings occurred” between May 16 and 26, but the company acted quickly to remove them. This clarification came after the Kerala Congress raised concerns on social media, pointing out that EaseMyTrip had earlier removed the Maldives from its platform in solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a statement issued on Friday, Pitti said: “Following the positive developments in repairing bilateral relations between India and Maldives, by both governments, we are resuming bookings to the Maldives. This decision comes after a careful consideration and a constructive dialogue with the Ministry of Tourism continues. of the Maldivian delegation during their recent visit to India and our office.

He highlighted: “As a nation-first company, we are always aligned with our government and support its vision. It is a progressive step towards renewed friendship and mutual goals of improving tourism.” EaseMyTrip initially halted its bookings in the Maldives in January after derogatory comments made by three Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Modi after his trip to Lakshadweep.

Meanwhile, The president of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu. He will be making a five-day visit to India starting October 7, to restore ties that have been under some strain since November last year. Although the Maldivian president attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June, it will be his first bilateral visit to India. Ties between India and the Maldives have come under severe strain since Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took office in November.

Within hours of taking oath, he had demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from his country. Later, the Indian military personnel were replaced by civilians.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), while announcing Muizzu’s trip, said it is expected to give further impetus to cooperation and strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.

“The President of the Republic of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, will travel to India on a state visit from October 6 to 10,” he said. During his visit, Muizzu will hold talks with Modi on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest, he added. Muizzu is also scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu.
