Samsung officials hold talks with Tamil Nadu Industries Minister amid ongoing labor strike

Senior officials of Korean electronics giant Samsung on Sunday visited Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa and discussed a quick solution to the ongoing labor strike at its factory. The meeting was held following Chief Minister MK Stalin’s directive to three of his ministers to resolve the matter at the earliest.

Nearly 1,100 employees out of a total of 1,750 are on strike at the Sriperumbudur factory near here since September 9 demanding various demands, including wage revision and better working conditions. They are also demanding that the Samsung India Workers Union, backed by the Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), be registered by the state government.

On Saturday, Stalin directed three state ministers, including Rajaa, TM Anbarasan (MSME) and CV Ganesan (Labour Welfare and Skill Development), to hold talks with the management and employees and ensure an early end to the strike.

“On the advice of Chief Minister MK Stalin, I met the management of Samsung today and held talks on speedy resolution of contentious issues. The Chief Minister has also directed MSME Minister TM Anbarasan and me to join the efforts of the Labor Minister CV Ganesan. to ensure a quick and positive resolution,” Rajaa said in a social media post on Sunday. “We are confident that Samsung management and its employees will come together and reach an amicable solution that benefits everyone involved,” Rajaa added.

Dozens of leftist party cadres, including their state leaders, were arrested on October 5 when they held a demonstration without police permission to express solidarity with agitating workers near the factory. In response to the strike, Samsung India said it was committed to resolving issues, including wages, benefits and working conditions, by negotiating directly with workers.

Samsung produces consumer durables at the plant, including refrigerators, washing machines and televisions.

“At Samsung India, the well-being of our employees is our top priority. We would like to reiterate that we comply with all laws and regulations in the country,” the company spokesperson said. “We are committed to resolving all issues, including wages, benefits and working conditions, by negotiating directly with our workers. So far, we have been able to normalize production at our Chennai factory. We have ensured that there are no disruptions for our consumers in the future. We again urge striking workers to return to work,” the spokesperson added.
