Railways, Information Broadcasting and Information Technology Minister Vaishnaw took the train from the airport to Cantt station, where he reviewed the progress of ongoing and some planned projects. The trip, he said, took 35 minutes to complete and, when it goes live in a few months, it could take five minutes longer.
The shortest route to Bengaluru airport from Cantt railway station is 32 kilometres, but the city’s notorious traffic jams make travel time unpredictable.
V Somanna, minister of state (railways) and Lok Sabha member from Tumakuru, will lead the project that will bring the railway line to the sprawling airport. He inspected the airport line project last year and most of the planned work had already been done, the Union Minister said.
He reviewed the renovation works being carried out at Cantt and Yeshwantpur railway stations. According to the minister, the works at the Cantt station will involve an additional urbanized area of 18,000 m2 with facilities near the tracks.
The two Bengaluru stations are among 1,137 stations being modernized in India, in what is billed as the largest such redevelopment project in the world. These types of projects used to take decades, the minister said, adding that this year 1,050 stations will be ready and inaugurated.

Circular railway The Railway Board is expected to finalize the detailed project report (DPR) for the Bengaluru circular railway in December. The railways conceptualized the circular railway for Bengaluru last year, with seven spokes connecting the city. The lines would connect Bengaluru with surrounding towns and cities like Tumakuru and Mysuru.
The minister said most people who live in those cities and work in Bengaluru can commute and return home faster.
According to Vaishnaw, last year the Ministry of Railways invested $29 billion and built 5,300 kilometers of new tracks, more than Switzerland’s entire railway network.
