As tensions rise between India and Canada over Nijjar murder, Trudeau speaks to British Prime Minister Starmer | India News

Diplomatic row between India and Canada: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday amid rising tensions between Canada and India following the alleged murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This comes after India withdrew some of its diplomats from Ottawa and expelled six Canadian officials from New Delhi. The move came as Canada implicated several Indian high commissioners and diplomats in its investigation into Nijjar’s murder. New Delhi has criticized the Trudeau government, stating that it has not provided even the slightest evidence to back up its claims.

According to an official statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, Justin Trudeau analyzed the recent events, calling them a “targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the Government of India.” The statement also noted that the leaders of Canada and the United Kingdom agreed to remain in close and regular contact as the situation develops.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, withdrawing Indian diplomats from Ottawa, said: “It was underlined that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the actions of the Trudeau government put their safety at risk. We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensuring their safety. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to recall the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,” the MEA said.

Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada

Tensions between India and Canada remain high after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told his country’s parliament last year about the “potential involvement” of Indian government agents in the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, the Trudeau government has yet to provide any evidence to Indian authorities to substantiate these allegations.

On Canada’s decision to link Indian diplomats to the Nijjar case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday said Prime Minister Trudeau’s hostility towards India has been evident for a long time.

The ministry further said, “The Government of India firmly rejects these absurd imputations and attributes them to the political agenda of the Trudeau Government which focuses on vote bank politics,” the MEA statement said.

Responding to the MEA’s strongly worded statement on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau accused the Indian government of making a “fundamental mistake” by supporting criminal activities in Canada, ANI reported.

Trudeau, at a news conference in Ottawa, stressed the importance of an upcoming meeting between Canada’s and India’s national security advisers, scheduled for this weekend in Singapore.

The Canadian Prime Minister recalled his recent interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying: “When I spoke with Prime Minister Modi late last week, I highlighted how incredibly important [the] was going to be the meeting between our national security advisors in Singapore this weekend. “He was aware of that meeting and I pressured him to take the meeting very, very seriously,” ANI quoted Trudeau as saying.
