The best Halloween candy to give out this year, according to kids

Halloween is quickly approaching, and if you’re the type who likes to dress up and spend the night at home handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, you better start preparing now. Supermarket shelves are already filled with all the giant bags of candy you could ever need to satisfy the hordes of sugar-drunk kids who ring the doorbell every Halloween, but there’s just too much variety out there. Do you stick with gummies or opt for a mix of fruit candies and chocolates so all the kids can choose? It is a difficult decision, but an important one. You don’t want to be called the worst house on the block because you’re handing out terrible candy.

To find out which candy is best to hand out on Halloween night, we went straight to the source (kids, of course) and asked them which were their favorite candies to stock up on long after October 31, which ones they wouldn’t even open, and why raisins are unanimously vilified. We also got details on the setting and the types of decorations you’ll need along with these treats to win “the best house on the block” in the hearts of all your young neighbors. This is what they said.

The best Halloween candy

Not surprisingly, gummies and chocolate reigned supreme in our survey of the most popular sweets, and size definitely matters: These kids want whole bags of candy and full-size bars.

Zaeem, 11 years old: “Full size Twix or Hershey bar.”

Sawyer, 11 years old: “Sour Patch Kids, because they’re really delicious.”

Penny, 7 years old: “Sweet corn, because they taste so good.”

Joey, 10 years old: “A king-size Crunch bar is a sign of a great house. The rarest candy is Sugar Babies; I’ve never had one in my entire life. The Krabby Patty gummies would be good too.”

Muse, 5 years old: “Lollipops or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.”

Iselle, 9 years old: “There is a house in our neighborhood that sets up a table with whole bags of one brand of candy and the kids can choose whichever one they want, although last year I saw one child choose a whole bag of Dots instead of Smarties.”

Theo, 10 years old: “King size Hershey’s, king size anything!”

The worst Halloween handouts

“No healthy stuff,” said nine-year-old Iselle, and that’s a popular sentiment in our informal survey. According to these kids, Halloween is not the time to tease them for brushing their teeth or eating vegetables. There are also some conflicting opinions about the sweets themselves: some children don’t like sour, others don’t like chocolate.

Zaem: “The worst things to pass out are toothbrushes and raisins.”

Margot, 7 years old: “In my opinion, warheads are the worst to hand out because they are too acidic and most kids don’t like them.”

Sawyer: “100 Grand bars are horrible. I bought a lot of them one Halloween and they tasted horrible.”

Kana, 7 years old: “Zombie Sour Patch Kids because they look weird and taste sour.”

Joey: “Twizzlers or licorice sticks. It sucks. Nobody likes them.”

Miranda, 11 years old: “NEVER FLOSS.”

Elena, 8 years old: “Fruits, raisins, vegetables. Nobody wants healthy things.”

Logan, 5 years old: “Something out of the trash.”

Aya, 7 years old: “Those candies are hard and I don’t like them and I spit them in the trash.”

Do you want to be the best house on the block? Take out those decorations – candy alone won’t be enough.

Muse: “To be the coolest house on the block, you would need cobwebs, ghosts, LED lights, and maybe some Power Ranger or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle balloons.”

Margot: “Glow sticks are the best gift to give because it’s so dark at night and it’s also fun to make bracelets and necklaces.”

Governess: “A princess house with vampire princesses, ghosts in tiaras and monsters in dresses.”

Miranda: “The best houses have good decoration and lots of sweets.”

Parker, 7 years old: “If it’s a nice house and there’s a lot of people there, you know it’s going to be good.”
