Oh! Kolkata will make you fall in love with Bengali cuisine in every bite

A recent dining experience made me realize that our comfort zone is actually a risky space. You become so comfortable with the familiar that you have no idea what wonderful things you are missing. Case in point: my recent dining experience at Oh! Calcutta. A single dining experience at this restaurant brought me very close to Bengali cuisine, a mind-boggling variety of dishes that I can’t understand why I never explored. Oh! Kolkata introduced me to not only the impeccable Bengali cuisine but also the wide spectrum of Calcutta (or Calcutta) food with its conglomerate of cultures that result in unique, special and oh-so-delicious dishes.

Oh! Kolkata founder Anjan Chatterjee hosted his restaurant’s 25th anniversary celebration and shared with us his vision of bringing Kolkata’s regional food to the rest of the world. He also spoke about the importance of the smallest local spices and ingredients, all of which come together to create wonderful Bengali food.

The interior of Oh! Calcutta is humble but elegant, two core values ​​that are also reflected in every dish and in the incredible service and hospitality of this restaurant. With soft Bengali music playing in the background and fragrant jasmine flowers arranged on the table, we began our feast with a glass of refreshing Aam Panna Shortbot.

To start, we ate the Jackfruit Quilt with goat cheese. The preparation was spectacular and it was difficult to tell that it was a vegetarian dish. Next we test the Anglo-Indian chicken cutlet which was crispy on the outside and full of flavors on the inside. The chop pairs well with the Mustard Aioli Sauce. A soft, melt-in-your-mouth item among the snacks was the Nawabi Gilawat Lamb with earthy notes of nutmeg. The starters were served with tomato chutney flavored with mustard oil and panch phoron and a refreshing Yogurt and cucumber sauce.

Each starter menu item had a delicious and unique flavor and texture.

My favorite starter is undoubtedly fish. Grilled Aam Ada Bhetki which is flavored with mango ginger, a raw mango flavored ginger. Skip the sauce with this one and you’ll be surprised to see the essence of mango lingering on your tongue when you bite into this dish.

The main course was like a comforting and delicious Bengali home cooked meal, cooked to perfection. with soft rice and crispy Petai Parathawe enjoy Kosha Mangsho which had tender pieces of lamb in a thick and flavorful sauce. In chicken, we loved the Lebu Pata Diye Murgir Jholflavored with Gondhoraj leaf, which is similar to kaffir lime leaf. He Prawn malai curry It stood out in the presentation, served inside a coconut and accompanied by a sweet and delicious coconut-based sauce. You can’t skip fish while enjoying authentic Bengali food. we try two cooks which had a creamy, lightly spiced yogurt base.

Some delicious vegetarian dishes on our main course included the comforting classic. Cholar Daland a dish that really stood out: the Koraishutir Dhokar Dalna. This dish included fried dumplings made with peas and chana dal, served in a delicately flavored curry. It had a fabulous flavor and wonderful texture.

Along with the food we enjoyed the Gondhoraj Salad with lime zest and sweet Pineapple Chutney which is enjoyed at the end of the meal.

After a hearty dinner, we refreshed our hands by dipping them into a warm bowl, a simple tradition that I greatly miss in most Indian restaurants. Finally we finished our delicious meal enjoying the sweet, rich and delicious Chenar Malpua and Baked rosogula with thick caramelized milk.
