Ethical AI: India AI Mission chooses projects from 8 universities for development of ethical AI

The India AI Mission has selected projects from eight educational institutes across the country to improve Ethical AI development in various topics such as machine unlearning, synthetic data generation, Mitigating AI biasAI ethical frameworks and tools to improve privacy, among others.

“As AI continues to permeate various sectors of society, India is committed to investing in agile mechanisms to develop indigenous governance tools, frameworks and guidelines that are based on Indian data sets and reflect its challenges, opportunities and data sets. unique,” the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement.

The Rs 10,372-crore India AI mission, an initiative of the IT Ministry, was launched in July last year and aims to create computing capacity of up to 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), develop artificial intelligence applications in sectors critical and address issues raised by central and state governments as well as government-run institutions.

The project on machine unlearning in basic generative models will be carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, while the project on designing and developing methods for generating synthetic data to mitigate bias in data sets will be carried out by IIT Roorkee.

Similarly, the project on the development of Responsible AI Bias mitigation in health services will be carried out by the National Institute of Technology, Raipur.


“Recognizing the need for adequate security barriers to advance the development, implementation and responsible adoption of AI, those responsible AI projects include development of indigenous tools and frameworks, and establishment of guidelines for ethical, transparent and trustworthy AI technologies,” the IT Ministry said in its statement.
